The Story of Baba Baidyanath Dham
Before darshan, let’s know the wonderful story of this Dham, which is connected with Baba Baidyanath and also with Ravana.
According to mythology, Ravana was doing penance on the Himalayas to please Lord Shankar and was offering his heads one by one on the Shivling. After offering nine heads, when Ravana was about to offer the tenth head, Bholenath appeared pleased and asked him to ask for a boon. Then Ravana asked for the boon of taking Kamana Ling to Lanka. He expressed the wish that Lord Shiva should leave Kailash and reside in Lanka. Mahadev agreed but put one condition. He said if you put the Shivling anywhere on the way, I will stay there permanently. Ravana agreed.
When all the gods heard that Lord Shiva would leave Kailash, they were worried. For a solution, they went to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu then created a divine plan and asked Varun Dev to enter Ravana’s stomach through achaman. So, when Ravana was carrying the Shivling towards Lanka, near Deoghar he felt the urge for nature’s call. He handed the Shivling to a cowherd boy (who was actually Lord Vishnu in disguise). Ravana could not lift the Shivling again after returning. Thus, Lord Shiva stayed there permanently as the Jyotirlinga at Deoghar.
