The story of Trimbakeshwar Temple is special and connected with Rishi Gautam. It is said that in ancient times, Trimbakeshwar was the tapovan of Rishi Gautam. Once, in anger, a cow was killed by him due to which he got the sin of cow slaughter. To free himself from this sin, Rishi Gautam meditated on Lord Shiva and requested Lord Shiva to bring river Ganga.

Lord Shiva accepted his request and sent holy Godavari here which is also called Ganga of the South. Not only this, Rishi Gautam requested Lord Shiva to always be established here and Lord Shiva accepted his request and established himself here in the form of three-eyed.
