About Rameshwaram Temple

Rameshwaram temple also known as Ramanathaswamy temple is located in Tamil Nadu. This temple is one of the most sacred Char Dham sites in Hinduism and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is famous worldwide for its architecture religious significance and natural beauty. Rameshwaram is surrounded by the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal and is a shell shaped island. How to Reach Rameshwaram

You can reach Rameshwaram temple by bus train or flight.

If you want to travel by train the nearest railway station is Rameshwaram station but due to construction work on Pamban bridge it is currently closed. So you can reach Madurai railway station instead. Distance from Madurai to Rameshwaram temple is about 170 km. From Madurai railway station you get taxis and buses to Rameshwaram. Taxi charges are around ₹1000 and bus tickets cost about ₹50.

If you want to travel by flight you can reach Madurai airport. From many big cities of India you get direct flights to Madurai. From outside the airport you get taxis for ₹1000 or you can take buses from Madurai bus stand.

If you want to travel by bus you will get direct bus services from Madurai Chennai Bangalore Coimbatore and Tirupur to Rameshwaram.

Rituals Before Darshan

Before going for darshan devotees first take bath at Agni Theertham. It is said that Lord Ram after killing Ravana bathed here. After bathing you can go to Rameshwaram or Ramanathaswamy temple. The temple has four Gopurams and the main one is the eastern entrance. Devotees then go to the northern entrance to bathe in the 22 kunds also called Theerthams. Bathing in these kunds is believed to free one from sins. Ticket for bathing in kunds is ₹25 per person. Changing rooms are also available.

The temple is grand and decorated with fine carvings on stone. Its corridors are considered among the longest temple corridors in the world with length of about 1 km. After crossing them you get darshan of Ramalingam and Vishwalingam. Around the main Shivling there is no artificial light only lamps which create a divine atmosphere. Inside you also get darshan of Lord Ganesha Goddess Parvati Lord Hanuman and Lord Vishnu. Darshan can be done free of cost or with a special ticket costing up to ₹200. In both ways you can have peaceful darshan. Mobile phones are not allowed in the main sanctum.

The temple timings follow a set schedule. The temple trust also provides prasad meals which are served from 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM. You can eat here or choose restaurants outside.

Important places include Ram Theertham where Lord Ram Sita and Lakshman are worshipped. Nearby is Lakshman Theertham. Then you can visit Panchmukhi Hanuman temple where floating stones used for Ram Setu are also displayed. Opposite this temple is Shri Nataraj temple. Another spot is the memorial of APJ Abdul Kalam where you can learn about his life and achievements. You can also visit Pamban bridge which offers a beautiful view of the sea.

Dhanushkodi Trip

On the next day you can go to Dhanushkodi by bus or auto. Bus tickets cost ₹100 to ₹150 per person. Autos charge ₹800 to ₹1000 for up and down with extra sightseeing. Distance from Rameshwaram to Dhanushkodi is about 23 km. Dhanushkodi is a famous tourist spot at the southern tip of Rameshwaram. On one side you see Indian Ocean and on the other Bay of Bengal. Earlier there was settlement here but after the 1964 cyclone it was destroyed. It is called the last land of India. From here Sri Lanka is about 30 km away. This is where the Ram Setu or Adams bridge begins. On the way back you can also visit Kothandaramar temple located on an island. It is said that after killing Ravana Lord Ram crowned Vibhishan at this place.
